Chiropractic Adjustments May Prevent Behavioral Problems Associated with Colic

Infants who suffer from colic often experience long-term behavioral problems, even after they recover from the disorder. Fortunately, a new study reveals that chiropractic care doubles a child’s odds of being spared these long-term problems.

The study compared 117 post-colicky toddlers who had received chiropractic care for colic during infancy and 111 post-colicky toddlers who had not received chiropractic care.

The study found that "toddlers who were treated with chiropractic care for colic were twice as likely to not experience long-term sequelae of infant colic, such as temper tantrums, and frequent nocturnal waking, than those who were not treated with chiropractic care as colicky infants."

"Untreated post-colicky infants demonstrated negative behavioral patterns at 2 to 3 years of age," conclude the authors. "In this study, parents of infants treated with chiropractic care for excessive crying did not report as many difficult behavioral and sleep patterns of their toddlers. These findings suggest that chiropractic care for infants with colic may have an effect on long-term sequelae."

Dark Chocolate May Lower Emotional Stress

This study is just in time for the holiday season!

Why do some people crave chocolate when they are feeling overwhelmed? There is scientific evidence that dark chocolate may lower emotional stress, according to a study published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Proteome Research.

Specifically, researchers found that eating 40 grams (1.4 ounces) of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in people who reported being highly stressed. Eating dark chocolate also partially corrected other stress-related biochemical imbalances.

Chiropractic Adjustments Improve Cognitive Function in Kids with Developmental Delay

Chiropractic adjustments may improve cognitive function in children with developmental delay. These findings are from a stuffy of 157 youngsters, aged 6 to 13 years, with developmental delay syndromes.

According to the report, "the outcome measures were a series of 8 standardized psychometric tests given to the children by a certified speech therapist pre- and post treatment, which evaluate 20 separate areas of cognitive function, including patient- or parent-reported improvements in school performance, social interaction, and sporting activities."

"Individual and group data showed that at the end of treatment, the 157 children showed improvements in the 8 psychometric tests and 20 areas of cognitive function compared with their values before treatment. Their ability to concentrate, maintain focus and attention, and control impulsivity and their performance at home and school improved."

Chiropractic Adjustments Help Babies with Trouble Breastfeeding

Chiropractic adjustments may help resolve breastfeeding difficulties in newborns.

Researchers looked at 114 cases of infants with breastfeeding problems diagnosed in the hospital or by a lactation consultant.

Upon chiropractic evaluation, "the most common physical findings were cervical posterior joint dysfunction (89%), temporomandibular joint imbalance (36%), and inadequate suck reflex (34%)."

After two weeks of chiropractic care involving 2 to 5 visits, all the babies improved, with 78% being able to breastfeed exclusively.

"Chiropractic treatment may be a useful adjunct to routine care given by other professionals in cases of diagnosed breastfeeding problems with a biomechanical component," conclude the study’s authors.

Tylenol May Cause Asthma

New research shows that acetaminophen (Tylenol®) may be associated with a bolstered risk of asthma and wheezing in both children and adults.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis of 19 clinical studies (total subjects = 425,140).

Findings showed that using acetaminophen increased the risk of asthma by 37%.

Results also revealed a slight increase in the risk of asthma and wheezing with prenatal use of acetaminophen by mothers. Researchers speculate that acetaminophen’s lack of inhibition of cyclooxygenase, the key enzyme involved in the inflammatory response of asthma, may be one explanation for the potential link.

Make One Change: Get It Straight - Good posture is the secret to more energy, less pain, and a healthy heart.

Did you know that poor posture is one of the most common causes of health problems, ranging from neck and back pain to heart problems and lack of energy?

Slouching compresses the lungs and makes the heart work harder. When your heart and lungs have to work harder, the amount of oxygen within your blood is decreased. Additionally, correct posture, by enhancing breathing and reinforcing your optimal physical alignment, can ease pain, reduce strain on muscles and joints, and increase energy.

Try this - sit or stand normally, then drop your chin toward your chest and take a breath. Notice how deep you can breathe. Now stand or sit up straight, look straight ahead, and take another deep breath. Did you notice that you can breathe deeper with proper posture?

Slumping muscles are never too far gone, says chiropractor Steven P. Weiniger of body and author of Stand Taller—Live Longer (BodyZone Press, 2008). "Posture can be strengthened by adding daily exercises that promote moving well and standing strong."

One simple exercise, which takes just one minute, and done three times a day, can produce amazing differences. Stand straight, tighten your stomach, and lift one knee up at a right angle to your body. Hold it for 30 seconds or less, bracing on a wall if needed. Then repeat the exercise on the other side. This exercise helps restore balance to your body and strengthen your core.

Other tips to help include:

  • Change positions every 15 minutes; sitting or standing in one position too long tires muscles.
  • Keep your chin parallel to the ground to keep your head in line with my spine and take stress off my neck.
  • Wear proper shoes and ask if orthotics would be of benefit.
  • Sleep on a firm mattress.
  • When sitting pretend there is a string attached to the top of your head, lifting your body up. When sitting, try to touch your shoulder blades together.
  • Be patient. Developing good posture takes time.
  • The key to good posture is to envision a string that drops from your ear and touches the center of the shoulder and hip.
