Chiropractic Helps Allergies

When most of us sneeze, we put it down to a cold or even allergies, and our first thoughts are to pop an antihistamine pill. But did you know that a Chiropractor could help you overcome your allergy problems? Most people associate Chiropractors with back and neck issues, and while it's true that chiropractors can help with such health conditions, they can also help the body achieve optimum health by ensuring the spine is correctly aligned.

A study from the University of California found that signals from the nervous system may influence the function of the immune system. While our immune system is there to fight against viruses, disease and infection, and helps to keep the body performing at its peak, it also works to dispel foreign contaminants that enter the body. When we sneeze because of an allergy, it's because our body detects the presence of a foreign object in the system, such as dust, mites, pollen, etc. and it produces chemicals to neutralize and expel the allergens. These chemicals are known as histamines. In the case of allergies, the immune system overreacts to the presence of the allergens in the body.

A chiropractor treats the patient by releasing the stresses on the patient's nervous system, which as a result causes the immune system to work more effectively and as a consequence allergies are thereby reduced. Patients with misaligned spinal vertebra may have pinched nerves, which apply pressure and stress the system. Once the trapped nerve is released, the nervous system in general is free from stress and the body can then work more effectively to neutralize the allergy-causing chemicals found in the body.

What else can be done? Enjoying tree nuts, like walnuts and pecans, apples, fish (for the fish oils), red grapes, and tomatoes have all been shown to help your body deal with allergies. (Time Article).

Chiropractic Adjustments Beneficial for Cervical Nerve Pain

Researchers at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College have found that spinal manipulation is an effective therapy for cervical radiculopathy (CR). The investigators also concluded that, based on published research, the Neck Disability Index (NDI) is a well suited assessment tool for the effectiveness of spinal manipulation on CR.

These findings are published in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association. The review study pooled data from other studies on the topic, which met strict inclusion criteria.

Activator Adjustments Effective

Activator is a popular adjusting technique, but is it effective? "Yes," say researchers at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College who conducted a recent review of eight studies that investigated the Activator Adjusting Instrument in terms of clinical effectiveness.

"Overall, the Activator provided comparable clinically meaningful benefits to patients when compared to high-velocity, low-amplitude manual manipulation or trigger point therapy for patients with acute and chronic spinal pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and trigger points of the trapezius muscles," write the study's authors.

Spinal Subluxations Linked With Reduced Blood Flow To The Brain

Decreased blood flow to the brain, or cerebral hypoperfusion, is linked with an increased risk of cell damage and death, which may up the risk of stroke and dementia. Previous research has linked cerebral hypoperfusion with migraine headaches. Now, a new report finds an association between neck pain, vertebral subluxations and cerebral hypoperfusion.

The experiment enrolled 29 women and 16 men with chronic neck/upper thoracic pain.

According to the report, "the subjects were grouped according to NDI [Neck Disability Index] scores: mild, moderate, and severe. The number of painful/blocked segments in the cervical and upper thoracic spine and costovertebral joints, pain intensity using the visual analog scale, and regional cerebral blood flow of the brain using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) were obtained."

Group 1 (mild) consisted of 14 patients. Cerebral perfusion measured by SPECT was normal in all 8 brain regions. Group 2 (moderate) consisted of 16 patients. In this group, a decrease in cerebral perfusion was observed (range, 20%-35%), predominantly in the parietal and frontal zones. Group 3 (severe) consisted of 15 patients. In this group, the decrease in cerebral perfusion observed was from 30% to 45%, again predominantly in the parietal and frontal zones. A significant difference was found between NDI groups with the ('moderate' and 'severe' groups showing greater hypoperfusion than 'mild.'
