Mobile Users Getting "Text Neck"

Have you seen how many people look down a lot of the day to text and read emails from their smart phones? Chiropractors are seeing more neck injuries, collectively called "text neck," related to chronic texting.

If uncorrected, 'text neck' can result in tightness across the shoulders, headaches, and neck soreness. The more technical, or accurate term to describe 'text neck' is Forward Head Posture. Forward head posture occurs when the muscles in the front of the neck tighten and shorten, forcing the head forward.

A study found that for every inch the head was shifted forward off center, it actually increases the weight and the demand on the spine by 10 pounds. In other words, a head shifted forward an extra inch to an inch and a half, is going to apply the equivalent of 20-25 pounds of extra pressure around the neck area.

This added stress on the neck will cause the disc and joints to wear out prematurely, result in arthritis.

What can you do? Do regular neck stretches and get your neck checked to ensure your head is on straight.


15 Minutes Of Exercise A Day Can Extend Your Life By Three Years

Doing just 15 minutes of moderate exercise a day may add three years to your life, a large study in Taiwan has found.

Lead researcher Chi Pang Wen of Taiwan's National Health Research Institutes said dedicating 15 minutes a day to a moderate form of exercise, like brisk walking, would benefit everyone.

After taking into account differences in age, weight, sex and a range of health-related indicators, they found that just 15 minutes of moderate exercise a day increased life expectancy by three years compared to those who remained inactive.

"The first 15 minutes...the benefits are enormous," Wen said.

Chiropractic Adjustments Help You Breathe

Chiropractic adjustments may help alleviate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in older people. These findings are from a case series conducted by researchers at New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, NY.

The study followed 6 individuals (1 male and 5 female) over the age of 65 years who suffered from COPD. They underwent 12 chiropractic visits including chiropractic adjustments over a 4-week period. Lung function tests were conducted at baseline, and again at 2 weeks and 4 weeks.

Results revealed a clinically significant increase in forced expiratory volume immediately following adjustment in 4 of the 6 patients at 2 weeks. "This was sustained in only 1 patient at 4 weeks. No clinically significant changes were observed for forced vital capacity at 2 or 4 weeks."

"This case series offers preliminary evidence that [spinal manipulative therapy] may have the potential to benefit lung function in patients with COPD who are older than 65 years," conclude the study's authors.

Chiropractic Adjustments Improve Stomach Function in Preterm Infants

Spinal adjustments improve gastrointestinal function and length of hospital stay in preterm infants, according to a study published in the journalĀ Chiropractic & Manual Therapies.

Investigators tracked the progress of 350 premature infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit without any major complication between 2005 and 2008. Of this group, 162 received osteopathic manipulation.

The babies receiving spinal manipulation had a significantly reduced occurrence of gut symptoms, as well as a significantly lower length of stay, compared with babies in the control group.

A Hot Dog A Day Boosts Diabetes Risk By 51%

Daily consumption of red meat, especially processed varieties such as hot dogs, bacon and lunch meats, significantly boost an individual's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, say Harvard researchers.

Investigators pooled data on 442,101 people. Of these, 28,228 developed diabetes during the course of the 20-year analysis.

After controlling for various risk factors of diabetes, findings revealed that a daily 100-gram serving of unprocessed red meat elevated the risk of type 2 diabetes 19%.

Even more alarming, a daily 50-gram serving of processed meat equated to a 51% bolstered risk of diabetes.

The good news is that substituting one daily serving of red meat with whole grains cuts the risk of diabetes by 23%. Substituting nuts lowers the risk by 21%. And, substituting a low-fat dairy product slashes the risk by 17%.

"Clearly, the results from this study have huge public health implications given the rising type 2 diabetes epidemic and increasing consumption of red meats worldwide," notes senior author Frank Hu. "The good news is that such troubling risk factors can be offset by swapping red meat for a healthier protein."

  6. Check your spine checked. Spinal subluxations cause your nerve system to misfire and not perform at it's best. Without a properly functioning nerve system, all other efforts will not achieve their maximum potential.
  7. Laugh daily. Children laugh constantly, and so should adults. Laughter is truly a powerful way to heal and improve your health. So hang out with kids, watch a funny movie, and just be a little silly.
